As we continue north, we pass the town of Mangonui. It provided a safe harbor for whaling ships and in the 1800s the town was a fishing and trading center. This photo was taken from the Rangikapiti Pa, the site of a Maori fortification overlooking the entrance to the harbor and all of Doubtless Bay.
